The Traveler’s Paper Kit is a basic survival kit for travelers who encounter emergency situations. The paper material allows travelers folding the kit and putting in their pockets during their trips, so that travelers are not demanded carrying bulky emergency kits all times.
The kit includes a waste basket, a solar compass (with a northern star chart on the reverse side) for finding north, a position maker (for retracing one’s steps later), a reflective card (that can function as a distress signal), a finger-pressure therapy chart (for alleviating indigestion and headache through a traditional and oriental palm-stimulation method), a matchstick, and a cup.
The Traveler’s Paper Kit awarded in RedDot Design Award and introduced many design magazines.
Background
When people travel, they do not think they would be in a hazardous situation. Because of this indifference to unexpected circumstances, they tend to travel without an emergency kit or proper equipment. However, accidents happen when one is unprepared. In these situations, what would be the necessary items for travelers to carry to ensure their safety? Why would most people not prepare appropriate equipment to deal with different issues when traveling?
Design Research
To gain an understanding of the background on accidents involving travelers, I researched the number of accidents happening in the mountains, the age group most prone to accidents, and the primary reasons in hiking and mountaineering accidents.
Design Concept
The Paper Kit for travelers is a panacea for the unexpected situations you might face during travelling. It is ideal for unprepared people who like to travel light without detailed planning. Unfold a Paper kit, and you’ll find a way to make numerous useful items: a waste basket, a solar compass (with a northern star chart on the reverse side) for finding north, a position maker (for retracing one’s steps later), a reflective card (that can function as a distress signal), a finger-pressure therapy chart (for alleviating bodily pains through traditional Oriental palm-stimulation methods), a matchstick, and a cup. This lightweight kit folds up into a flat booklet that’s the size of your hand.
